Pain Management Services

Offering treatments and management of a wide range of chronic pain conditions.

Services provided by Southwest Spine and Pain

Back Pain

Back pain is one of the most common pain complaints and can manifest in various forms. Pain may be caused by any number of structures in the back, such as discs, muscles, ligaments, and nerves.

Knee Pain

Over 100 million Americans suffer from knee and joint pain on a daily basis. Half of all anti-inflammatory prescriptions written and 25% of all visits to primary care physicians are due to knee pain.

Neuropathy

People with neuropathic pain often describe it as burning or shooting pain. They may also have numbness and tingling, and they may feel pain from normal things, such as going out in cold temperatures or rubbing against something.

Joint Pain

Joint pain can produce a number of uncomfortable symptoms, resulting in limited mobility and a reduced range of motion. Patients with joint pain may experience redness, swelling, and warmth around the affected joint. The painful joint may also be tender to the touch, causing various aches and pains.

Cancer Pain

Cancer pain can be caused by any number of things – chemotherapy drugs, nerve damage, or the cancer itself. Sometimes, the tumor presses on surrounding structures, causing immense, electric shock-like pain. Other times, chemotherapy drugs can cause adverse side effects, leading to nerve damage and other painful condition.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia pain differs from general chronic widespread pain in many ways. Fibromyalgia pain is not only characterized by its widespread musculoskeletal pain, but the fatigue, cognitive difficulties and other symptoms it causes (i.e. headaches, depression, restless leg syndrome, etc.).

Dr. Brian Richardson and Dr. Bryan Hoelzer have both been named Intracept® Center of Excellence physicians by Boston Scientific—an elite national recognition awarded to providers with advanced training, demonstrated proficiency, and a commitment to delivering outstanding outcomes with the Intracept® Procedure for vertebrogenic low back pain.

Dr. Richardson received the designation in July 2024, followed by Dr. Hoelzer in September 2024. They are two of only five physicians in Utah to achieve this honor, with fewer than 80 Intracept® Center of Excellence physicians nationwide.

Rheumatology Services

Offering treatments for musculoskeletal diseases and systemic autoimmune conditions

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common of all types of inflammatory arthritis. It usually is associated with significant fatigue and swelling and stiffness of one or many joints.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is an old term used to describe wear and tear on joints due to age or injury. It is not an inflammatory disease and therefore medication is of little help other than to lessen pain.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is often confused with arthritis. It actually has to do with the density or hardness of bones and is most often without symptoms until a surprise fracture occurs in the back, hip, or foot.

Lupus

Lupus is a constellation of autoimmune problems caused by the immune system attacking joints, skin, and kidneys and can manifest in many ways.

Gout

Gout is almost a man-made arthritis. Though it can rarely be hereditary, it is often the result of alcohol use or diuretic use for high blood pressure.

Ankylosing
Spondylitis

Ankylosing Spondylitis is a Greek term for "backs that turns to stone." It is one of the most hereditary arthritis forms and is associated with a rare gene known as HLA-B27.
